GMTA Safety Management Council

GMTA and Safety, Hand in Hand

Safety professionals in the trucking industry wear many hats.  Driver safety and education, human resource management, enforcement issues, local, state and federal regulations, just to name a few, keep today’s truck safety professional’s very busy.  Staying current on these requirements and keeping an eye on your bottom line is a never-ending challenge.

GMTA can help by providing safety information and regulation updates to keep your company on track.  By joining GMTA’s Safety Management Council, a safety professional in Georgia can have an easy, accessible source of ideas, information, and professional development for every type of operation.  Promoting highway safety among Georgia motorists and the trucking community is our primary focus.  Each year, members of the Council collectively spend hundreds of hours inspecting commercial vehicles at weigh stations throughout the state, hosting public outreach projects at welcome centers and rest areas, and teaching drivers of all ages how to share the road safely with other vehicles.  Our monthly meetings include informative speakers and opportunities for our members to learn new methods and ideas for improving safety at their company.  Each year the Safety Council earns the Summa Cum Laude award for excellence from the American Trucking Associations Safety Management Council for our leadership and active participation in safety events.

GMTA’s Safety Management Council works closely with a multi-agency alliance called NETS, the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety.  Georgia NETS includes representatives from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Georgia Department of Public Safety and its Motor Carrier Compliance Division, Georgia Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration National Safety Council, Georgia Road Team, GMTA-member trucking companies and others.  Partnerships with these groups have led to other highway safety initiatives including Drive Safely Work Week, Law Enforcement and Truckers for Safety, Georgia Truck Safety Awareness Week, Hands Across the Border, and Experts On the Road.  Again, the group's mission is to make Georgia highways safer for all motorists through education and outreach.  In addition, the GMTA Safety Management Council is host to the annual Georgia Truck Driving Championships, Georgia Fleet Safety Awards, Georgia Driver and Safety Professional of the Year and the Rick Perkins Memorial Scholarship Award.

If that's not enough, your membership in the Safety Management Council saves you money on meetings, seminars and other Council activities throughout the year.

The GMTA Safety Management Council is more than a monthly gathering.  It is an opportunity for trucking industry professionals to go beyond the workplace and share their experience and insight with their peers and the public.  So, won't you join us?  After all, highway safety is everybody’s business.
